Ad Pseudonym Attacks

Me being introduced:

“… and this is my friend Thumper.”

“Hi, Thumper. It’s very nice to meet you.”

Me introducing myself:

“Hi, I’m Thumper.”

“Thumper, huh? You seriously go by Thumper? Ha! That’s so weird. You’re weird.”

I have never been able to get my brain around why it works this way, but at least there’s documented precedent.

Author: Thumper (MJ)

Thumper Marjorie Forge is a Gardnerian High Priest, an initiate of the Minoan Brotherhood, a devout Discordian, a recovering alcoholic, and a notary public

  1. I think it may have something to do with the fact that your friend clearly takes your name seriously, introducing you like they would any other name, so the other person would be the odd one to say anything disparaging. If you introduce yourself, they probably assume everyone else is thinking the same dickish thing as they are so they’re more comfortable being a douche.
